Transition to Spring

Spring and all its flowers now joyously break their vow of silence. It is time for celebration, not for lying low” - Hafiz

As the days get longer and the earth recovers from the winter, we start to feel a shift to spring. The heavy snows begin to melt, there is more moisture in the air and on the ground. Life begins to stir under the surface. The earth and water elements are most prominent in the spring. Spring can feel slow with the heaviness of added moisture. Gentle movements and nurturing of our body is essential to flushing toxins and feeling well.

Rejuvenate with the new energy of spring. Making subtle adjustments in our daily habits and diet can significantly impact our overall well-being.

Here are five recommendations for navigating the spring season:

  1. Spring Cleaning: There is a reason this is a phrase. Take some time to declutter your space, your bathroom and create a fresh environment to welcome the new energy of spring. Re-commit to your routine, exercise and sleep if you have fallen-out. In every season, a routine is important to staying well, and spring gives us time to recharge.

  2. Practice More Movement: The heaviness of added moisture and the earth and water elements, can make us feel sluggish or slow. Invite a more vigorous yoga practice into your routine, fast walks or any other movement activity that makes you feel good.

  3. Eat Lighter Foods: Incorporate arugula, bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, chard, endives, microgreens, spinach. Spices: mustard, ginger and black pepper to help generate heat. Avoid heavy and oily foods and visit your farmer’s market to see what is in season.

  4. Add Immune Boosting Herbs: Similar to a cold season in the Fall, our immune system is tested as the temperatures warm for spring. Adding herbs like turmeric, ginger, triphala, and talisadi help break-up any respiratory congestion and maintain a strong immunity.

  5. Spend Time in Nature: The quiet introspective time of winter is now coming to an end. Start enjoying more time outdoors to acclimate to the seasonal changes.

By making these simple adjustments, you can gracefully transition through the spring season, promoting a sense of well-being and balance in your mind and body.
