Transition to Winter

โ€œAnd don't think the garden loses its ecstasy in winter. It's quiet, but the roots are down there riotous.โ€ - Rumi

The journey through winter ranges in severity across the globe. It unfolds with the elements of air and space joining forces for a dry climate and eventually taking on a heaviness with the addition of moisture (snow and/or rain) in the atmosphere. Adapting to the winter climate invites us indoors to a place of stillness, reflection and rest. The Kapha season of winter stretches from mid-January to early-May, though timelines may vary with the diverse experiences of moisture and cool, dry air in different regions.

Embrace the season of winter and bask in the tranquility that this time of year brings. Making subtle adjustments in our daily habits and diet can significantly impact our overall well-being.

Here are five recommendations for navigating the winter season:

  1. Consider More Sleep: In this hibernation phase of winter, welcome more sleep. This could be an extra 30-minutes, hour, or short nap. A well rested body is less prone to sickness and restores our body from the harsher climate.

  2. Take a Warm Bath or Shower Before Bed: Make it an evening ritual a few times/week. This practice creates a healthy bedtime routine, relaxing the body naturally.

  3. Cook Hearty Vegetables and Warming Spices: Incorporate potatoes, carrots, squash, cauliflower, broccoli, beets, parsnips. Black pepper, ginger, garlic, cayenne, cinnamon, cardamom and clove. Nourish your body with warm foods and drinks.

  4. Dress Warmly: Maintaining your body heat throughout the winter season is essential to feeling well. Bundle up to go outdoors, wear your cozy socks and hat to prevent heat loss. Avoid wet hair outside and if your feet are always cold, wear socks to bed.

  5. Reflect & Rest: A wonderful time to journal and meditate to evaluate how you are feeling. What could you do for yourself on a daily or weekly basis? If you are feeling stuck, bring some movement into the body with a yoga practice, walk, or other favorite physical activity.

By making these simple adjustments, you can gracefully transition through the winter season, promoting a sense of well-being and balance in your mind and body.
