Transition to Summer
"Smell the sea, and feel the sky. Let your soul and spirit fly." ยญโVan Morrison
With more light and warmth in the summer months, we feel vibrant energy all around us. The water and fire elements are the most prominent in the summer. Summer can feel like a happier time of year because of the increased sunlight and link to increased serotonin, but we can also more easily overheat. Overheating can show up in skin rashes, increased body temperature, or irritability. There are several adjustments to break the heat and keep our body cool and comfortable.
Making subtle adjustments in our daily habits and diet can significantly impact our overall well-being.
Here are five recommendations for navigating the spring season:
Stay Hydrated: Drinking water is essential all year long, but increasing water intake in the summer is important due to increased sweat and the body working harder to stay cool. Enhancing your water with natural electrolytes will help your body absorb and use the water more efficiently. Add a pinch of pink salt, honey and lemon to your water.
Practice Less Strenuous Movement: Modifying activities in the summer will help the body from overheating. Practice physical activities earlier in the morning or later in the day, practice activities in the shade, try more leisurely activities and get in the water when possible. Additionally, protect the skin with light clothing like 100% cotton or linen and a hat. Avoid too much direct sunlight.
Eat Cooling Foods and Herbs: Incorporate melon, mango, cherry, watermelon, berries, celery, cucumber, broccoli, asparagus, zucchini and coconut water. Spices: fennel, coriander, and turmeric. Herbs like mint, hibiscus, cilantro, and dill to reduce heat in the body.
Oil Body Massage: Massaging cooling oils like coconut oil or sunflower oil into the skin before you take a shower is a great way to nourish your skin and enhance circulation. Essential oils like rose, geranium and sandalwood can be added to provide relief from heat-discomfort. Use the Everyday Oil before you shower and use the When Living essential oil roller after you shower.
Cool Showers and Time in Water: Adapting our food choices will cool the body from the inside-out, but a quick way to cool the body is getting in cool water. Try taking a cooler shower or ending with cool water. Swim in the ocean, river, lake, or pool to quickly soothe the body from the outside-in.
By making these simple adjustments, you can gracefully transition through the summer season, promoting a sense of well-being and balance in your mind and body.
